Hospitality FAQ

Questions we get asked about hospitality marketing

What this costs, which channels carry the category, how long it takes, and what we report on when the usual metrics do not fit.

How do hotels increase direct bookings?

By generating demand upstream and defending it at the point of search. Your hotel name, your name plus a room type and your name plus 'booking' are the highest-converting queries you will ever see, and OTAs bid on all three. Winning those back, giving guests a concrete reason to book direct, and capturing first-party data before the booking rather than after is what shifts the mix.

How do we reduce OTA commission without losing occupancy?

Gradually, and without leaving the channel. OTAs buy discovery you cannot replace overnight, so the realistic move is shifting the ratio rather than exiting. If third-party channels drive most of your bookings today, an even split is a sensible first target. Direct bookings carry meaningfully higher profit per reservation once lower acquisition cost and higher on-property spend are counted, which is where the margin recovery comes from.

What marketing works for independent hotels and resorts?

Local and experience-led search, a booking path that works on a phone, and reputation management treated as a revenue channel rather than a support task. Independents cannot outspend chains on brand, but they can out-specify them on the exact stay a guest is searching for, which is where most of the winnable intent sits.

How do you market seasonal or destination businesses?

By building demand in the off-season and converting in the window. Search visibility and content earned in the quiet months are what make the peak affordable, because everyone bids in season and nobody bids out of it. We plan the year as one curve rather than as a set of campaigns attached to high season.

Does lifecycle marketing work for hotels and travel brands?

It is the most underused channel in the category. A guest who has already stayed is the cheapest booking you will ever make, and most properties collect the data to reach them and never use it. Post-stay sequences, rate and availability triggers, and segmentation by stay purpose routinely outperform the paid budget they cost a fraction of.

What should a hospitality marketing program measure?

Direct booking share, cost per direct booking, revenue per available room against channel mix, and repeat guest rate. Website traffic and social followers are inputs. The number that decides profitability is what share of your occupancy you paid a commission on.
